What is popular culture? Make it simple, popular culture is everything, like the events, people, mode, and trends that capture the public imagination. It will also help to describe the current cultural trend, and the cultural past trend. In every age there will be always a trend that can be determined as popular culture. For instance, music, clothes, food, and television program have changed from a decade to another decade. Now, we are watching “Glee” – an America television serial – and maybe some years ago our aunts were watching “Friends”.
Popular culture itself is about satisfaction. It will satisfy people by ensuring they get what they want whether they need it or not. It’s just like what kind of clothes that people are wearing, the food people eat, and of course the television programs which inform and entertain people. Besides, there are some icons can be said as popular culture such as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Santa Clause, and many more. All people around the world know them well.
The purposes of popular culture are to find out what we want, what we think and feel, and what we believe. Popular culture is more about what we want not what we need. It happens because need is the biological matter and popular culture more about the image of our desire. Popular culture’s products reflect the audience values and beliefs. Popular culture is not only reflecting our minds and hearts but also manipulating them. It has already influenced us by looking how we dress, what we eat, and even how we think about ourselves.
How could popular culture influence us?
The expansion of mass media and technology help the expansion of popular culture in brainwashing people’s mind so that we’ll believe what masses believe by having the goal of making money or commercial. Because we are passive consumers, we can’t escape from popular culture expansion, and the only thing we can do is buying or not buying, watching or not watching, eating or not eating. That’s why popular culture influences us and somehow shapes people’s identity.
Popular culture is already about history, news, and about what we were as about what we are. If we think back to a popular fashion trend, a music group, or an event that had been great news in our lifetime, than we’ll see how much the impact of popular culture. Popular culture is around us and influences us already. And maybe without pop culture, we wouldn’t be able to sing the song “Happy Birthday”, watch “Donald Duck” cartoon, eat “Hamburger”, or any of the other innovations that people take for granted.
