THE STATUE

I need to read for many times to take a conclusion about what ‘THE STATUE’ by ARTHUR GREGOR talks about. I think this poem is not easy because it was not simply written. ‘The Statue’ reflects the poet’s mind as well. According to me a poem that makes the reader think, think, and think again is a good one because there’s something undecidable inside and need an extra attention to reveal it. Just like the title ‘The Statue’ itself, it’s something undecidable already. But, I fully understand now what this poem talks about.

After taking a conclusion about what this poem talks about, I get such a deep impression. This poem seems like me, someone who is living just like a statue; absurd (baroque can be meant as absurd). This ‘statue’ person can see much kind of things, the sadness, the happiness of people around them, but they can’t do anything. It’s like the characteristic of statue which is built using stone, they only can observe with the ‘eye stone’ without any act to help people around them.

This poetry is good enough because I can take myself as the part of it. Just like me, I’ve tried to destroy these statue characteristics inside me which is so absurd, I can’t even tell how could I have this kind of characteristics, and always wondering alone. With this ‘statue’ along with me, just like the character ‘a boy’ in this poem, he sees the material such as strict rows of trees, columns, fountains, and pavilions as the royal ease of the world. We (the boy and I) are such naïve ‘statue’.

Remembering I’ve tried to destroy this ‘statue-ness’ in myself for years, I’ve also tried to rid myself of rigid. But I have failed. I see the real world when someone is sad, feels the pain, and live unhappy (2^nd and 3^rd stanzas), but I just can do nothing. I just can see them without any act. How miserable I am. It happens continuously and I just can see with this ‘eye stone’, observe of what is meant to die.

People with this ‘statue’ inside them feel sorry towards others because they see a lot and zero act. I believe many of us are part of this bunch of people.

THE RED CADILLAC

When the first time I saw the title I was ‘wow’ so unique, but after I finished reading it, it’s just like nothing. It didn’t leave a deep impression to me. It was just like a poem for the author’s own sake. According to me, there’s something different between a poem which is created for someone else contains a message and a poem written just to aim the author’s goal. I don’t know why I just feel that they are different. It’s just based on my preference.

So, for me this poem is not good enough. This ‘The Red Cadillac’ is just like someone who is so much addicted to material. There’s no motion. From this poem, Willie “Slick” Williams just wants to show the reader that he has already depended to his Cadillac, the turtle wax, and the white chicks. Well, there’s something’s lacking here, just like the narration that Willie “Slick” Williams reads William Carlos Williams “So Much Depends”, then writes a letter to the producers of the TV makeover show Pimp My Ride, explaining why his car should be featured on the program, but where’s exactly the part tell us that his Cadillac need a reparation? Why does he write it while Pimp My Ride is a TV program to repair cars? Does he need the Cadillac to be repaired?

The first line is good enough because he totally copies the William Carlos Williams’. It shows us that William ‘Slick’ depends on something. The second, third, and fourth stanzas tell us the things that he so much depends. They are the Cadillac, the turtle wax to clean the car, and the white chicks. It implicitly shows us such glamorous condition, doesn’t it?

The first, red Cadillac slick, glamorous enough, even just hears this name.

Second, turtle wax. It’s the product of the largest automotive appearance company in the world and distributes its products in more than 90 countries. It seems like many people use it to clean their car. For me this turtle wax is not enough to tell us that the car is broken. Because it probably that the car just needs to be cleaned, not because this is an old car.

Third, beside the white chicks. Chicks here can be analyzed as the white (American) girls.

Then once again where’s the part that the producers of Pimp My Ride will take a conclusion that this red Cadillac needs a makeover? If I’m not mistaken, Pimp My Ride will choose the car which is broken, can’t be really used and need reparation. So what’s wrong with this Cadillac? Even this ‘William’ wrote ‘beside the white chicks’ means he can still go around the city carrying this ‘white chicks’ (the white cute (American) girls), doesn’t it?

This poem is just lacking in the part telling the reader how much broken the car. Why? It’s because in my imaginary this Cadillac is in a good condition, and this boy lives so glamorously with the ‘turtle wax’ and ‘white chicks’.

HALF-NAKED: WHAT ARE THEY TRYING TO DO?

HALF-NAKED: WHAT ARE THEY TRYING TO DO?

This photograph was taken last November 2010 and I found this news in Koreanindo, a blog which is full of Korean popular culture news. There are two people here, named Yoon Doo Joon (the boy) and Woori (the girl). Both of them are Korean famous idols.

The caption title is “Half-naked: what are they trying to do?” while the news title is “Woori poses half-naked with Beast’s Yoon Doo Joon”. For your information, I’m a big fan of Korean boy band, named BEAST, and the boy in this photograph is the leader of this group, Yoon Doo Joon. Because Yoon Doo Joon is popular in Korea and have many fans, this photograph caused a little controversy. Fans wanted to know who that girl on the tub was and what the two were really doing. The first time I saw this photograph, I couldn’t take a breath. I was just like “What the hell is it?” and as a BEAST’s fan girl I hated this girl so much.

The fool me, I was angry without paying attention to the news. Well, let’s take a look to the photograph. The girl, a Korean model, Woori is naked, standing in the bathtub full of water and the boy, Yoon Doo Joon who is sitting in the other side of bathtub is looking at her. If we pay more attention, just like what the Korean netizens (internet citizens) did, we’ll find that the zipper of Yoon Doo Joon’s pants is lit bit opened. This is the most controversial part, the zipper is opened! Maybe because of the half naked Woori and Yoon Doo Joon’s zipper is opened creates the caption “Half-naked: what are they trying to do?”

But actually, they just make a pose, just like the news title “Woori poses half-naked with Beast’s Yoon Doo Joon”. The first thing we should pay attention is the expression of Woori itself, she sees the camera, and look directly in to it. Her pose actually is like a model who is directed by someone. Carefully she poses not to let her private parts seen and I believe the crews make the bubble covering her lower part body to make it invisible in front of the camera. Second thing that is important to be analyzed is the way Yoon Doo Joon looks at the girl. We all will agree that this boy is looking at her, but just looking! Not more! He doesn’t seem exploring this girl’s body. We can see at his eyes which are not looking directly to the Woori’s back, he seems look at Woori’s hair. The third is the zipper part; it’s actually opened. Maybe because the director of the photography wanted to make a great atmosphere with the theme she chose, so she asked Yoon Doo Joon to open the zipper.

This photograph was actually taken for “Marie Claire Korea” of November edition featuring the member of BEAST, so not only the leader as the model here, but the six of them (Yong Jun Hyung, Jang Hyun Seung, Yang Yeo Seob, Son Dong Woon, and Lee Gi Kwang) took this project too. We can see the evidence in the photograph there is a link: www.marieclairekorea.com means they were just modeling a brand style.

According to Woori, the actress/model who appeared in the artistic photographs with Doo Joon, she was really nervous during the photo shoot as this was something extraordinary from what she usually do and she had no idea how it would turn out. Then just as I explain above, Beauty (the name of Beast’s fans) who saw the pictures had mixed reactions. Some were unhappy; some saw the manlier image of Doo Joon and were delighted while some were in disbelief.

Well, from the analysis above we can say that there is nothing happened between Yoon Doo Joon and Woori because they just did the photo session for “Marie Claire Korea”. Yoon Doo Joon doesn’t have any bad intention to the half-naked Woori, and Woori doesn’t have any purpose to seduce him by coming up half-naked in the bathtub.

If this picture seen by a careless person who doesn’t pay attention with the news, probably she/he will think that these two will do such improper thing.
